HI, I'M EMILY

And I’m so glad you’re here.

Once upon a time, many moons ago, I took a high school photography class and fell in love. I was never very good at artistic endeavors nor was I good at expressing myself. But photography seemed to make me just a little better at both.

Over the course of the next decade, I tried to pretend photography was just a hobby. I guess we can add pretending to the list of things I wasn’t good at considering the fact that I majored in photography in college.

Turns out, photography is just a part of who I am. I can’t remember a time that I wasn’t shooting. Even if it wasn’t something I was actively pursuing as a career, it was still something that was very much…me.

Having my own dark room & my own print shop is a dream come true. Thank you for being here. I hope you take the time to look around.

And I really hope you see something you like.

THIS IS VALENTINA

And I’m so glad she’s here.

Some people are born to create. Valentina is one of them.

She grew up in Argentina and was always drawn to figuring things out—whether it was drumming or biomechanics or building something from nothing. She’s the kind of person who sees a problem and solves it before anyone else even realizes it’s there.

When I needed a website, she built one. When I needed structure in the chaos of running a creative business, she brought it to life.
She is the technical mind behind 1885 Atelier, making sure everything works so I can focus on the art.

But creativity has a way of pulling you in, whether you expect it or not. A few years ago, I handed her a camera, and now she’s also a brilliant photographer. She has the ability to see things in such a unique and creative way.

In the future, some of the prints here will be hers.
And I can’t wait for you to see them.

So, What's with the name?

The most common question i get is “1885 Ah – what?”

It’s pretty simple, really. 1885 is the year that photographic film was invented. Atelier is french and is defined as “a workshop or studio, especially one used by an artist or designer.”

I wanted something that said exactly what my business is without saying exactly what my business is. Plus, 1885 Atelier lends itself to a logo better than “hi, i’m an artist who works in her studio & loves shooting film.”
